Two people were killed when a German-registered glider crashed in Croatia’s Velebit mountains on Friday, Croatian police said on Saturday.
The aircraft went down on Friday afternoon in the Velebit mountain range, near the Adriatic coast in central Croatia.
It had been travelling from the Czech Republic to the Croatian coastal city of Zadar. Aviation authorities lost contact with the aircraft, a Diamond HK36 Super Dimona, at about 16:00.
Civil protection teams, firefighters and mountain rescuers were deployed in large numbers to search for the aircraft.
After a lengthy search, made difficult by the rugged mountain terrain, rescue teams found the wreckage and the bodies of the two occupants.
Croatian authorities have not yet released any information about the victims’ identities or nationalities. The aircraft was registered in Germany.
